Schlieren West

Initial Situation 2005

Schlieren West’s boundaries are the railroad tracks, the town limits, Badenerstrasse and the center of Schlieren. It is isolated from the surrounding town area due to the streets. These traffic carriers contribute extensively to the noise pollution in the area. Within the area itself there are only very few public-access streets, leaving the area quite inaccessible. Large parts of the area are characterized by vacant and storage spaces as well as interim uses (car trade). There are some residential and commercial buildings on the Kesslerplatz and on the Steinwiesenstrasse. The areas Pfaffenwis and Geissweid on either side of the Goldschlägistrasse are still undeveloped and are currently being used for agricultural purposes.

Goals 2005

The direction in which the area is developing is basically: opening the area, connecting it to the town’s ground plan, integrating public spaces (paths, streets, parks). Schlieren would like to intensify its residential function and Schlieren West is the large development reserve within the greater area of Schlieren. This would mean: claiming the areas close to the center for dense residential and mixed use, mixed uses along the Badenerstrasse, residential buildings in the center of the area, and a reduction of residential use towards the west. Residential development is dependent on the development of the area and the economic interests of the owners. A first building phase is expected to begin by approx. 2008 (the Pfaffenwis and Goldschlägi areas along the railroad). Further steps will follow until 2030.

Summary of the development 2005–2020

The largest development area in Schlieren was completely rebuilt into a new residential quarter, composed of different types of housing estates. Rental apartments as well as terraced single-family houses and condominiums were built. The design plan, based on the urban development concept STEK I, provided a clear structure for the public space. This created a binding basis for the building projects of the more than 30 private property owners. Long, six-story buildings along the railroad line and Badenerstrasse shield the area from noise. The Parkallee and Parkweg run east-west through the entire area as car-free, continuous connections; smaller, differently designed and used pocket parks open up at regular intervals. Most of the people who have moved to Schlieren West are families. Accordingly, the city of Schlieren also built the new Reitmen school complex here.

A comprehensive final evaluation of Schlieren's urban development will be published in the book "Stadtwerdung im Zeitraffer," published by Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich, in 2023.
