Hospital area and adjacent residential areas

Initial situation 2005

The area around Limmattal Hospital between Badenerstrasse in the north, Spitalstrasse in the west and Urdorferstrasse in the south is purely residential. Around Badenerstrasse, Langackerstrasse, Bundentalstrasse and Spitalstrasse large building projects with extensive green spaces predominate. The adjacent Heimeliweg/Urdorferstrasse area is characterised by settlements of detached houses. Färberhüsli hill is an important open space featuring a sports ground, family garden area and agricultural land. More open spaces are located south of Urdorferstrasse in the Trisler district. By far the largest part of the housing stock is considered to be of high quality and protected. Traffic-calming measures, safeguarding and developing the footpath network and access to the surrounding landscape are all designed to enhance quality. However, the ongoing renovation and modernisation of housing stock is advisable, in particular for the housing estates built in the post-war period.
Locations for overall views were set in 2005 on Heimeliweg and Urdoferstrasse. As an extension to the concept of 2005, detailed views have also been taken in the hospital area and in the adjacent Heimeliweg/Urdorferstrasse areas since 2011.

Goals 2005

The objective is to increase the quality of life in Schlieren, thereby strengthening the town as a residential area. Comprehensive renovation or possibly demolition and reconstruction is advisable for residential buildings dating from the 1950s and 1960s. Ongoing modernisation and maintenance, as well as enhancement of the residential environment, are also necessary for the 1970s buildings at Badenerstrasse. New high-quality apartments are planned for developed areas along public transport axes. The upgrading and integration of the main roads into the urban environment is essential to improve the quality of housing.

Summary of the development 2005–2020

The Spitalquartier and the adjacent areas have remained purely residential and have changed little in character and atmosphere. New replacement buildings can be observed sporadically in the single-family house districts, and some of the large housing estates from the 1970s and 1980s have been redeveloped, such as the "Schönenwerd" estate on Spitalstrasse. The Limmattal Hospital built a new acute care hospital and a new nursing center. Hardly visible is the largest structural intervention: the hospital district was tunneled for the Limmattalbahn, which partially passes under the district.

A comprehensive final evaluation of Schlieren's urban development will be published in the book "Stadtwerdung im Zeitraffer," published by Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich, in 2023.
