Long-term photographic observation of Schlieren 2005-2020
A research project by Zurich University of the Arts/IFCAR

Project managers: Meret Wandeler, Ulrich Görlich

The project documented the urban development of Schlieren, a suburban community to the west of Zurich, over a period of 15 years. Overall views of 63 locations throughout the urban were re-photographed every two years under the same photographic conditions. Series of detailed views were re-photographed every five years. Locations are in the town centre and the former industrial areas, where large new developments have been undertaken. Alongside this, the project observes the subtle changes in residential areas and green spaces.

The photographic long-term observation provides a new tool for monitoring spatial change. The result is a documentation of the spatial change of an entire municipality that is unique for Switzerland. It illustrates the key issues of spatial development based on concrete locations and help to raise awareness of sustainable settlement development.

A comprehensive final evaluation of Schlieren's urban development will be published in the book "Stadtwerdung im Zeitraffer," published by Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich, in 2023.
